Monticelli's original Italian has been translated to English for her Red Desert series, giving a charming flavor to the prose. Her characters are 3d, and her hard sci-fi setting is researched impeccably. Novella-length book one, "Point of no return," serves as an introduction, constructing the hooks that power future volumes and ramping up the tension and mystery.

Stuart Thompson snaps awake upon hearing a click. It is 2:50 in the morning and a high-pitched beep sounds the alarm. A pick-up truck has flipped onto its side. Thompson, a volunteer firefighter, attends the scene.
Officer Greystock of the Platterville PD is also at the crash. Thompson and Greystock are colleagues. Greystock recognizes one of the victims as Bull, a meth user with a bad attitude.
We are launched into the seedy world of Avery Spade. A criminal issuing fake ID's to gang members to buy Pseudoephedrine. Bull was the one to drive for hours to small drug stores for the cough mixture.
Back on duty, officer Ben Grystock outlines a plan to his shift buddy Stu Thompson. It is a plan to foil Avery's drug ring once and for all.
