The prologue also sets-off the tone of the novel and introduces Barker as a skilled writer. The characters remain nameless. The reader is an observer just as the police squad is voyeurs to a liaison between a client and a dominatrix. When things go un-expected, pressure mounts. The book launches finding DCI Carver, the somewhat preoccupied detective, at the gates of a mansion in what promises to be a most intriguing read.

The real world is full of synchronicity, since it's basically all one "thing." Or all one action. So, for fiction to remind us of that fact is a welcome affirmation of how everything is kind of a miracle, never something to take for granted as being some ol' mundane life. Nope. Not when books like this are here for us to read.
